Fena just started her first year in Internal Medicine Residency. She still designs and d(r)abbles and fiddles with instruments in her spare time, and occasionally tries her hand at web design - when she is not hospital-hopping or knocked out on the sofa post-call.
2019-2021
Fena completed her housemanship year in the middle of the pandemic, and spent her first medical officer year in medical oncology, general medicine and checking off her bucket list in general surgery.
2014-2019
Fena was part of the sixty-man pilot batch of Residential College 4 and the first Singaporean team to attend the IFMSA General Assembly March Meeting 2015 in Turkey. She has performed in various events for medical school as well as her residential college.
She is also the founder and co-head of SGMarrow, and served as the infographics assistant to the International Federation of Medical Students' Association Vice-President of Public Relations and Communications, secretary of IFMSA Singapore, the Design and Publications Head for AMSA Singapore in AY15-16 and Marketing and Sponsorship director in AY16-17.
She has volunteered as a group moderator, debate adjudicator, scavenger-hunt-leader, storyteller and first-aider at various events and projects, and was invited back to her alma-mater as a H2 Biology teacher and peer tutor for the first half of 2014.
2010-2013
On 31.08.10, Fena set up .bcd to provide affordable covers for writers. Over the span of four years, she expanded it to include its large pro-bono arm CoverUp! which boasts nearly 1500 designs to date, the non-profit project ReCovered which makes new covers for public-domain books that can then be downloaded for free, and Very Short Cover Consultations for aspiring artists. Her work has been featured as Galleycat's NaNoWriMo Tip #28, and voted as the best book cover in Wattpad's 2011 Watty Awards.
She was the top student in H2 Biology in Year 5, overall 2nd-runner up and gold medalist in essay-writing in the World Scholar's Cup's Tournament of Champions at Yale University, and recipient of her school's Colours Award in 2012. In addition, she was a member of the school's award-winning Symphonic Band, Publications and Taekwondo teams as well.
2002-2009
Fena was part of the guitar ensemble, Innovation & Enterprise Club, and Chinese Society in primary school, and was also the defending gold medalist in the 100m race at her school's annual sports meet from 2005 to 2007. She was consistently ranked as the top three in the level, and received the Outstanding Pupil Award in 2006 in lieu of her achievements.
In 2008, she joined the National Novel Writing Month. This meant writing 50,000 words every November till medical school started in 2014. That's 50k words x 6 years worth of embarrassing novels.
Skills
Working with Adobe Photoshop and GIMP since 2008, Fena uses an iPod/iPhone as a makeshift camera when needed. She plays the piano, guitar, bassoon and ukelele. And occasionally warbles.
Education
Fena graduated from the National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine in 2019, making the Dean’s List in years two, four and five and qualifying for the viva examination for Medicine in her final MBBS exams.
She still isn’t sure how.
She has also spent a month in the anatomy lab in Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 2017, and another in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine in the University of Oxford in 2018.
Her alma-maters include North Spring Primary School and Dunman High School, where she studied Biology, Chemistry, Math and History. She speaks English, Mandarin and a bit of Hokkien, and is currently learning (or attempting to learn) Malay, French, Italian and Spanish.
